complex things feel human.

About

Good design, to me, is only
good if it changes something.

I'm a Nicaraguan-American designer who grew up between two cultures, which probably explains why I've always been drawn to products that need to work for many different kinds of people.

Almost seven years at Citi taught me that the job is mostly organizational. The best design decisions I've made weren't about color or layout, they were about clarity: understanding what a team actually needs, then fighting for the simplest version of it.

How I work.

Three principles I keep coming back to, project after project.

i.

Break it down, then build it back.

When requirements are vague, and they often are, the worst thing you can do is design against the ambiguity. I've learned to decompose problems until something becomes concrete, then bring the team along piece by piece.

ii.

Everyone has a point. The job is finding the design that proves it.

Conflicting stakeholder needs are rarely wrong, they're just incomplete. Good design doesn't pick a side. It finds what's true for all of them.

iii.

The customer is not a user story. They're the whole point.

Requirements can obscure the most important thing: a real person on the other end of every decision. I design like I'll eventually have to look that person in the eye and explain why I made each call.
